Generally the only person who actually knows how anything runs is the secretary. When a manager is replaced, generally they will keep the secretary to help with the transition.

After that things get a little bit complicated. Some managers will already have a secretary that they trust and may want to replace you with them. If they like you they are likely to transfer you to a new position rather than ask you to resign (they can't fire you).

Some managers will want to take their secretary to their new company.

While most of the time they are separate, most General Managers have a strong relationship with the secretary. Often if the manager goes across the street, the secretary will follow.

The company can always hire a new GM and the secretary will report to he/she. There's no need for the secretary to look for new job.
