After he is dead.

2007-09-16 23:01:24 · answer #1 · answered by Defunct 7 · 0 0

He screwed himself first by betting on his own team. Every clubhouse has big signs warning against gambling.

Then he lied to the investigators, commissioner's office, etc. in the 80s. Now he's screwed himself twice.

He compounded that over the years, lying to fans and former team-mates and friends.

Then, he finally sells a book in which he admits the lies. So, he's making money off his confession, but he never seemed too sorry about it.

I can't see the Veteran's Committee forgiving that, either. Rose will get in about the time that Gavvy Cravath does. . .

Never.

Rose doomed himself twice -- the original serial gambling, and then refusing to fall on his sword when Giamatti gave him every chance to do so.

Rose's expulsion is PERMANENT. His drawing breath has nothing to do with his status wrt baseball or the Hall. He can be reinstated either when "permanent" expires or when he is innocent.

Rose has done nothing to even remotely begin to approach taking the first nanometer of a step on the road to his baseball redemption, and by now it is pretty clear that he never will. That road would END at the Hall; it would not begin there. A permanent ban has to be permanent, or at least have significant justification for overturning it based upon enormous improvements in Rose's life, character, and actions. Simply being Pete Rose is nowhere near enough, and that it is Pete Rose enduring such expulsion and fall from grace REALLY makes the point clear to every other ballplayer. No one is bigger than the game.

Bad decisions can come with bad consequences. Rose repeatedly made the bad decision to ignore the gambling ban. Tough beans.

No, he will never get in. I think it mainly has to do with his general attitude. He lied and then tried to cover it up. Then to top it off wrote a book and tried to make money from his dirty deeds. He broke the cardinal sin of baseball. You can do that and expect to be put in a place of honor.

His problem was lying about it for 12 years. Things might be different if he had just told the truth in the beginning.

I sure HOPE he never gets in. He is a HUGE black mark on the sport of baseball. I hate what he did more than the doping stuff.

Well, Shoeless Joe is not in yet.

I personally would let him in the day after he dies.

Same with Baroid and Little Mac.

Pete will probably get in via the veteran's committee, most likely after he dies. His punishment for gambling is not getting elected during his lifetime, and enjoying the perks and accolades that go with a HOF election. He obviously deserves to be in, (most hits all-time) but will not get in until after death. Joe Jackson will probably go in with him, it's only right.

No, he won't.

Yes, he did.

Chipmaker (up there ^^^) said it all very eloquently, so there's no need to repeat.
