What are those functions making the different thoughts about anything? They are the functions whose relations form the individual consciousness, the time and time for the contents in the specific timely relation, not the same time.

(a) Mechanism

The object (1) in its immediacy is the notion only potentially; the notion as subjective is primarily outside it; and all its specific character is imposed from without. 1. Our ordinary Knowing has before itself only the object which it knows, but does not at first make an object of itself, i.e., of the Knowing. But the whole which is extant in the act of knowing is not the object alone, but also the Ego that knows, and the relation of the Ego and the object to each other, i.e. Consciousness.
