It was about love and redemption thru the eyes of a young boy. Malena was a very beautiful woman whom every man in town loved and desired, while every woman envied and hated her. When her husband was reported missing in action during WW2, the men in town each tried to seduce and take advantage of her while the women scorned her. In desperation, Malena pr0stitued herself to high ranking officials both Italian and German just to survive since no one in town would help her. Her reputation was shot, but she stays in town hoping her husband would return one day and save her from her plight. In the end when her husband reappeared wounded but alive from war and still decided to stay with her despite her sordid reputation, they started their lives all over again. The townsfolk, guilty over their hypocrisy and ill treatment of her, change their attitudes towards her and she gains the townsfolk's grudging respect for the hardships she had gone through all in the name of love. I'd say the over all theme of the movie is "Love Conquers All".
