5.2L 8 Cylinders. 4x4

Just changed the Oil sending unit and the ignition gasket.. had the air filters cleaned when I got the oil changed and they said nothing about them needing to be replaced..

Seems to be in good shape all around.. however...

When I start the car the RPM jumps straight up to 1.5 - 1.75 which it should not.. and goes back down to 1 when I placed it in drive or reverse..

I've been told loads of stuff about oxygen sensors and air and blah blah and I just don't get it..

I used this fuel cleaner stuff that I bought from Autozone (they picked it out) and it went from 7.9 MPG to 6.0!!) WHAT IS GOING ON!! Is my car beyond dead??

Sounds like a bad O2 (oxygen) sensor. They're sensors that look somewhat like a spark plug and are usually mounted in your exhaust manifold. Some vehicles have more than one. Have it put on a diagnostic machine - it should tell you what's wrong. P.S. What's an ignition gasket?

It will vary depending on maintenance, driving style, mods to the Jeep, and engine size. A mfg. sticker is generally a lot higher than you actually get. My 98 Grand Cherokee limited only averaged around 14 mpg. It had a 5.2 V8, lift, 32" tires, and full time 4wd. A stock Jeep with a 4.0 I6 will average around 18-19, a V8 around 15-16.

starting off, the idle is to high. when you start the car, the computer fast idles to warm up the motor/sensors.
after it's complete, usually 1-2minutes, the idle should go down to 750rpm, if it does not, you essentially are driving with the choke on so you are burning fuel because the choke is stuck.

when you put the car in gear, yes the idle goes down, but the choke is still open.
you might want to try cleaning the throttle body with carb spray, you might want to see if the idle can be adjusted because it's easy as a turn of a screw.

try the coolant temp sensor. if this is not working properly it lies to the pcm telling it the engine is to cold so the pcm sends more fuel to heat the engine up. please do no use the fuel injection cleaner from auto zone it containes products that are to harsh for your fuel injector o-rings can cause a leak
