Remember also that tuition for Stanford is three times what you'll pay at Berkeley. If you are a science major then go for the best value, because neither of them will pay you any attention as an undergrad. Get your B.S. out of the way, and then worry about going to the expensive schools.

If you are honestly the kind of student to be considering schools like Stanford, Berkeley won't be too hard to get into. I guess it depends on the program, but the undergraduate admissions is definitely not as selective. That said, you still better have great qualifications.

Stanford doesn't take many transfer students (nor do any of the top private universities). Most of the students they do accept come from four year colleges rather than community colleges.

Berkeley, on the other hand, is a public university and reserves a set number of spots for students transferring from community colleges. I taught there while I was completing my PhD -- and had several students who had been at CCs. It is still selective -- so if you hope to transfer to Berkeley -- make sure that you are at the top of your class.

EDIT: I found CHICHO's comment amusing. He obviously doesn't know that Stanford is one of the two or three hardest universities to get into in the country.

Stanford does accept transfer students, however, I am not familiar with their process.

Berkeley has a comprehensive brochure online that outlines what they expect from transfer applicants: http://students.berkeley.edu/files/Admissions/9258_Info_TransAdm.pdf
