A religious-based government isn't good--but I wouldn't call it the worst. Look at Nazi Germany--or the Communist countries (though their ideology, from a sociological perspective, amounted to a religion for all practical purposes).

But to answer your question--in this day and age (as opposed to pre-industrial societies) it's about intolerance and domination. Consider the "religious right" in America. The main thrust of their agenda is twofold: a lack of tolerance for diverse opinions, behavior, lifestyles, culture. And their goal is to secure domination ofthe state to a degree that will enable them to sue the state to force others to act in a manner they approve of.

You can also ask why are some people like that? Tht, however, is another topic--and a complicated one. So i'll pass. :)

Some people feel a compulsion to make other people believe the way they do. They usually feel that way because they are insecure in their own beliefs. Some people feel that they need a public way of displaying their religion to prove how religious they are. Some people simply believe that theirs is the only right way and thus all should be forced to follow it. Theocracies only work if their are sufficient resources to provide for enforcement, which is usually what brings them down. They get top heavy and fall over.

Well, we are 'one nation under God' after all.
Mixing church and state is not recommended only because like everything else, there will always be nutcases to screw everything up. But starting your day with a good prayer will always be better than not.

It seems that some people decided that what they believe is what everyone should believe and the heck with anyone else's right to religious freedom. They mistakenly tell people that only Christians founded this county so that everyone would be Christian and so only Christians have the right to worship as they see fit and that everyone else should cater to their beliefs. How mistaken is that. . .and not very Christian. . .
It seems to me that church is where you practice the religion of your choice and state should not be dictated to specifically by anyone's religious beliefs. And since morality supercedes law, that should be sufficient.
