What makes people put so much importance on ceremonies?

Wedding ceremonies, graduation ceremonies, baptism ceremonies, awards ceremonies, ship launching ceremonies, political swearing-in ceremonies, ribbon-cutting ceremonies, even ground-breaking ceremonies to start work on a new building or road.
All these events can occur without wasting time and money on a ceremony.
Any comments on why people seem to love having the ceremonies?

I think Jung said it best, "Ritual speaks to the subconscious." Ceremonies add depth to the human experience. It imprints important and uplifting events on our psyche.

All the ceremonies you're talking about are ones that are done in public. They're occasions to show a change in status in front of the community, making them properly above-board and showing pride in an achievement.
