If the Yankees and the Red Sox end up tied for first in the AL East, the Yankees would finish first in the AL EAST because they beat Boston in the season series correct? Or has this been changed and they will play a tie-breaker game to determine who holds first place for the AL EAST?

Yankees, by a 10-8 advantage in the season series.

If the Sox had won (thanx a lot, Curt), they'd have been tied 9-9 and gone to the next tiebreaker, intradivision record, where the Red Sox have a huge (but now immaterial) lead.

This happened a few seasons ago. Yanks and Red Sox were tied for first at the end of the season, but since the Yanks won the season series, they won the AL East.

If they were tied, MLB has decided they won't ever have single playoffs to determine who is div champ and who is wildcard - they'd flip a coin. They will only have single game playoffs to determine who gets into the playoffs or not.

So, if coming in second means they'd still be the wild card then no playoff. If coming in second means another team would be the wild card then they would have a playoff to determine who is div champ and who is left out of playoffs.
