I can't get water or sugar or breath-holding to work for hiccups.
If you can find some dry bread (or cake or whatever), put in in your mouth and bite it just enough so it breaks in pieces small enough to swallow. Do this fast because if the bread gets wet it won't work. Then swallow all the pieces at once. While they are dry and hard. Don't drink any water right away.
You can do the same thing with an antacid tablet. Bite it once to break it up and swallow the chunks.
One other method is to stick your finger in your mouth until it hits the back of your throat. Not down your throat--the back of your throat. This will cause you to gag. If you have eaten recently, it might induce vomiting. If you don't like doing either one of those, use a different method.
Hiccups are caused by spasms in your diaphragm. All of these remedies work on the same principle. They stimulate the same nerves in your throat as the nerves that affect your diaphragm.
Good luck.

Hiccups have something to do with air being trapped or cut off suddenly WHEN YOU ARE BREATHING. Therefore, to cure hiccups, you have to stop breathing. Take one huge breath of air, then hold your breath for as long as you can, don't forget to pinch your nose and keep your mouth closed. Don't let any air in, and don't let any air out. It is important to completely stop any airflow for this to work.
I have forgotten how long you should hold your breath, but it would probably be best to do so for 30 or more seconds. I assure you, it will work. If it didn't, then you weren't holding your breath long enough.
Forget about the other 'remedies' some of them are too troublesome and require other materials. For this one you can just do it on your own with needing any equipment.
Good luck!

Hiccups Treatment
Try these methods at home:
* Hold your breath.
* Drink a glass of water quickly.
* Become frightened.
* Use smelling salts.
* Pull hard on your tongue.
* Place one-half teaspoon of dry sugar on the back of your tongue. (You can repeat this process 3 times at 2-minute intervals. Use corn syrup, not sugar, in young children.)
Medical Treatment
Treatment for hiccups depends on how severe they are.
* For the common hiccups that will usually stop on their own, home remedies are generally recommended.
* For more severe, persistent hiccups, your doctor may try medications to manage your hiccups. Chlorpromazine (Thorazine) is usually the first prescription medication tried for hiccups, although drugs such as baclofen (Lioresal) and medications used to treat convulsions such as phenytoin (Dilantin) have also been successful.
* Surgery to disable the phrenic nerve (the nerve that controls the diaphragm) is often the treatment of last resort.

Try drinking some carbonated soda. This works best if you hold your breth, and slowly sip. I find this works within a minute or so.
Hiccups are affected by CO2 levels in your blood.
