All societies are not SO selfish. American society is. We're a capitalist society. Capitalism in and of itself is very selfish.

I would love to say that I am not selfish. I fight against it everyday. But I am a bit and so is everyone else in our country to their own degrees.

In order to be completely unselfish we would have to give up the things that make our lives more comfortable in order to help people worse off than ourselves. We would have to give and give of ourselves until all people lived equally.

Simply giving what you can "afford" to a charity is not a complete lack of selfishness. If you went with out the Heat and AC in your home you could give more. If you walked or rode a bike you could give the savings from the car payment and gas. If you settled for clothes that were suitable, but not flashy nor expensive you could give that money. If you got rid of the TV, cell phone, computer, and game systems you could give all of that saved money away. If you didn't take that vacation you could give that money away.

It's a fact of life. Whatever you give, you could give more. There has to come a certain point at which you are unwilling to give any more. That is your personal degree of selfishness. Many Americans could stand to lower their degree of selfishness, but I for one can not strive for nor achieve a life of complete unselfishness.

I think it's always been that way. It's just a matter of when we figure it out. I cried when I realized the extent of it for the first time. It's quite unfortunate. Some would say it's the nature of humanity to be selfish, but I had to learn to be that way just to make it in society.

I think society always has been selfish. Most likely, every generation for the last 2,000 years has probably asked the same question.

A lot of times it seems like technology made us impatient, selfish, more demanding of instant gratification, etc. I think it just makes these traits more apparent. Also it gives us an easier way out.

Our society has become one of every man or woman for themselves.

It has a direct correlation of the increase in power the corporations have on our lives.

Corporations tap into the human nature of greed....lusting for things and making people step over anyone who gets in their way.

It has a way of shutting down all avenues of compassion for our fellow man and woman.

Corporations didn't have the same amount of control in the 40s and 50s, things were much better then....

It's always been that way, actually caring about others (not just family and friends) and the universe at large is quite a new idea.
