The UAW doesn't want to go on strike at all. Neither do they want their members to be taken advantage of. Go to the UAW web site and take a look around. I was there a couple of days ago and saw a story about Toyota and some of the things that they are doing. You would be upset too if it was your job.

Is the union perfect? I doubt it. Who is? It is better to have the union than not have it.

At least now that I'm retired, I can count on the check coming every month. It isn't much at all, barely less than 1/2 of what I need to live on every month, but I get by. They didn't find a reason to get rid of me when I started to get old and close to retirement age.

That's why the old big three have such a legacy cost, and the Japanese don't. I believe that it is something like $1700 difference in the cost of a car that the American car companies have to bear.

I just hope that more people buy American, and quit sending the profit dollars back overseas to Japan.

The UAW employee is doing everything that they can to put out quality products and cheaply as they can. I've done it, and I've seen it done.

good luck to you.

I don't think they will go on strike, they don't want to hurt the automakers like you think. It is just a way to make the talks progress faster. It is not the UAW hurting the companies it is the US government, why is there no national health care system? Why does the US government let Korea import tons of cars to US but our export to Korea is limited? Why does US let China import to US and China doesn't allow US to export any vehicles to them. Why does US allow the Japanese government and Toyota keep the yen artificially undervalued, that way they make $4500 average on every vehicle they import to US(Toyota imports half of all their vehicles they sell in US)?So how can the UAW compete against foreign competition? The UAW is going to take over the health care for one thing and I'm sure there will be a lot of other changes. While I don't agree with everything the UAW does I don't believe they are the cause of the automakers problems.Coastcowboy doesn't know what he is talking about,Chrysler just built a new plant in Toledo and is going to build 2 new plants in Detroit,GM is building a plant in Toledo right now for a new transmission. Also there is at least 2 Toyota plants that I know of that are UAW in the US.

I own a shop, and I will agree with what you are saying. The union is nothing more than a hired mouth between management, and employees. Way back when, the union did do some good things for the workers, but we now live in a new age of foreign imports that come into this country (made by slave labor) selling at an unfair cheap price. When there are no jobs left, then maybe someone will start buying stuff made here.
Glad to help out, Good Luck!!!

That's the ONLY tactic they know. Demand everything and strike until the company caves or goes under. Then moan and whine when GM, Ford and Chrysler closes plants in heavy unionized parts of the country and opens plants in Mexico and Korea.
Buy American.....but let's FIRE the union heads first!
