My son was 6 weeks early. He's the size of a regular newborn now. If its ok to give babies baby food starting at 6 months, will that be 8 months for him? or still 6 months? ect...

Developmental you should consider you son milestone age six weeks behind his actual age.

Most children catch up by the time they are two.

Generally you adjust the developmental milestones for the preemies age so I would assume feeding would be similar. The 6 month mark is a guide line anyways, some full term babies aren't even ready at 6 months, while others give their babies solids at 4 months. I would ask your doctor for advice if you are really concerned. I would think if your son is able to sit well in a highchair (without being propped up) and shows interest in food, then he is likely ready for the solids. My daughter for instance, started "chomping" and mimicking us eating when ever she saw us doing so...she showed a very clear interest in food. Just take things slow...if he isn't ready, then try again in a few weeks. There is really no rush.

My daughter was 5 weeks early. The doctor actually told me to start giving her cereal when she was 3 months old to help her gain some more weight. This would have been actually 2 months old based on the fact that she was early. He said because of her size at birth that her developmental milestones should be around the same as any other baby, with the exception of her shots. She was a little more than a month behind with them at first because he didn't want to risk anything with her health.

You didn't say how big your son was at birth. If he was at or near 5 lbs like me daughter then I would say you can keep him on track with things like solids, cereal, etc.. The best thing to do is ask your doctor his/her opinion on the matter because they would know best! : )

As far as development went my daughter was right on track with her actual age! It was funny to see something as tiny as she was doing the things she did. She held her head up before 3 months on her own, turned over at 4 months, crawled at 6 months, started using words at 8 months like mama, baba, dada and she was walking at 10 months with help and on her own by 13 months!! Every baby is different so talk to doc if you have any concerns!!

Yes, should take into consideration. The food thing I would talk to baby Dr. about. However do not be alarmed if baby crawls, walks, etc a little "later" since he was preemie. He should out grow or caught up within first 2 years of life.

Your baby's digestive system doesn't mature any faster just because they are outside the womb early, in fact it is probably more susceptible to damage. I would wait until at least 8 months, except his iron levels will have to be monitored as premature infants are more at risk of anemia. Iron supplementation should not be done routinely even for premature infants because there are risks (including and increased risk of disease and an increased risk of anemia due to blocking the absorption of iron from breastmilk).

Is Iron-Supplementation Necessary?

Ask your doctor. It should be fine, but there are a few instances when it may not be. Developmental milestones usually refer to walking, talking, sitting up, head control, etc. For food starting, definitely ask him/her.

It is common to start looking at milestones for premies bassed on due date not birth date. Also if people ask how old he is you might say "hes half past the monkey's *** and quarter till his tail". That will shut the nosey bastards up good!

my son was 6 weeks early also. the food was on the right schedule, but everything else he's been behind on, like rolling over, crawling, and now walking. good luck & i hope yours is half as precious as mine.

no, start at the 6 mos. Just because he was premie doesn't mean he's going to be behind or anything.
