Waitress' britches in a bunch?
Burma Shave, and then eat lunch!
Yes I made that up, because I like doing that silly sort of thing. Actually that would have been too suggestive for the times. Sad to say Burma Shave signs are gone the way of the Nash Rambler, the wooden sided station wagon, and the nickel coke. But they were great while they lasted!

I haven't seen Burma Shave signs in years. The last 2 roadside signs that I remember:
1. Going north on 285 from Ft. Stockton, TX to the New Mexico State line we kept seeing signs about the Deluxe Cafe & Hotel. This were really nice signs. When we finally got to Carlsbad, NM, we found the DeLuxe Cafe & Hotel...It was anything but DeLuxe. It may have been great in the 1920s or 30s but it certainly wasn't anymore. This was in 1995. Hopefully, it has been torn down, by now.
2. When I was a kid, we drove from MS to TX & along the way, there were signs that rhymed and at the end of the rhyme it said,"Cream-O is a good soft drink." We finally stopped somewhere near Corsicana, TX & ordered a Cream-O...YUCK...I remember the taste to this day. The soda was an amber color & it tasted like water from a kid's outdoor pool with a touch of honey for the flavor. Even my Dad made a yucky face.

At the end of every quarter, my university bookstore creates a rhyme advertising textbook buy-back and posts is Burma Shave style along the long walkway on campus. I always enjoy reading them. I have also see individual property owners post poems on signs down long fencelines adjacent to the road. I can't remember any of the poems though.

Don't know what a Burma Shave is, and never seen at advert for it..
Assuming it is some kind shaving cream? Or an American saying for a "wheeley"?

Anything by Robert Frost, and Edger Allen Poe
Storm Fear
by: Robert Frost
When the wind works against us in the dark,
And pelts with snow
The lowest chamber window on the east,
And whispers with a sort of stifled bark,
The beast,
'Come out! Come out!'--
It costs no inward struggle not to go,
Ah, no!
I count our strength,
Two and a child,
Those of us not asleep subdued to mark
How the cold creeps as the fire dies at length,--
How drifts are piled,
Dooryard and road ungraded,
Till even the comforting barn grows far away
And my heart owns a doubt
Whether 'tis in us to arise with day
And save ourselves unaided.

As a kid, I loved the Burma Shave roadside signs, ...sign after sign continued the Poem/advertisement. I haven't thought of those things in years. Thanks for the memories...they were just plain fun, weren't they?
