I live in a very stressful enviorment, MY mom and dad are always putting the heat on me, They want me to do community college full time while working a full time job, They are also really agressive and always get mad at me although iam just trying to help. theres alot of alcoholism in my family, and Iam really feeling the brunt of it. I want to go to school, but I cant afford it, Iam not even sure I have the time for it, plus no one will accept me, I have a 3.5 GPA, and was in three national honor societies, and was an eagle scout. I was thinking about about getting in to a 4 year college and take a loan to get away from here and just concentrate on my schooling, as that would not be possible here at the community level living with my parents any suggestions?

Gosh, you DO need some support, both monetary and emotional. First, college counselors may recommend that you do NOT take a full load and work at the same time. The freshman year is the most difficult. Since you are an Eagle Scout, I have attached 2 sites that have scholarships for Eagle Scouts [search on the scouting site for more information]. Are you still in high school? If so, keep those grades up and see your high school counselor.

Your situation is difficult and I would bet neither of your parents have gone to college. If they did, they would be more understanding of your situation. Perhaps, if you go to a CC and then transfer to a 4 year school? Your Eagle Scout leadership and communiy training should help you make connections with people who might offer advice or give you a part time job. I wish you welll!

Hello Matthew:

You first need a career plan. What do you want to do for the next 40 years? How will you do this? do you need to go to university and take on $120,000 worth of debt? Can you start out at a lower level, earn a nest egg, then attend university to further develop your skills?

You need to get away from your parents. Find a roommate and rent a cheap apartment with him/her. Work your job, attend CC and pick up the mathematics you need for the university. Earning your AA from the CC will show the admissions people that you are serious about your education, and it could get you a moderately well paying job in the nonce.

If you don't know what your career path should be, go to the CC counseling center and ask for an aptitude or interest survey.

Start tomorrow.

Good luck

Do it. You will regret NOT doing it later in life...especially if you don't end up finishing college
