Well, personally, I have trouble believing the conspiracy theorists on this one. But I do think there might be something that the general public is not aware of or doesn't seem to be aware of. It's the same thing that happened in World War II. People have said Roosevelt (and his administration) knew that the Japanese were going to or might attack but did nothing. The questions then were the same as now.

Why?

The answer has to do with the strategy of war. In both cases the government knew it was dealing with a very aggressive foreign country or organization and knew that at some point, it would have to fight in order to survive. In order to successfully defend itself and eradicate the aggressor, the U.S. knew it would have to have as many allies as possible. If the U.S. just attacked Japan or Afghanistan, there might be some important allies that would not side with the U.S. because the U.S. appeared to be the aggressor nation. But, if the U.S. was attacked, then many more nations would side with the nation that was attacked. And, in both these cases, it didn't take long for the aggressor to attack. In which case, the U.S. then had a solid reason for saying, "We have no choice but to defend ourselves and go to war."

So, you see, the Bush administration, as well as the Clinton administration may very well have known that something major was going on behind the scenes, given the incidents of the '93 bombing of the WTC, and the attack on the USS Cole, but they couldn't just attack, since they had not been seriously attacked yet. But after 9/11, it was obvious that the free nations of the world were dealing with a very serious aggressor, and appropriate action had to be taken.

I honestly think that the U.S. government would not have allowed this to happen if it knew exactly that this was how it was going to be attacked.

I'm not saying that all this is what actually happened, but it does sure seem possible, and a lot more plausible than "madmen" presidents actually planning attacks with other countries - that just doesn't make sense, or seem possible given the large number of people surrounding and working with the president everyday. Accusations are one thing, but to eventually and definitively prove once and for all that an American President and his administration knew what was about to happen and did not take the steps to prevent it shows either gross incompetence, treason, or both - it seems it would be a monumental and virtually impossible task to prove.

It is all about control. Only sick people would take up for their abusers (government by default) and turn on their own (enlightened people who are on their side and can see through the government's lies). Most people in authority are sick enough to want more at any cost. Staging a terror disaster is not beyond them. They knew all along that we would be attacked, at least 4 months in advance. Those lower in the chain of authority tried warning their superiors, and they were told to shut up if they wanted to keep their jobs.

9/11 is the beaurocrat's dream. Don't tell me they didn't have a hand in it. They cared more about computer crossmatching, being able to harass people at airports, and showing their muscle than they did the 1000's who died. I'd like to see everything back to a pre-9/11 state. But the government won't. They use 9/11 as an excuse and use the victims for their own ends and getting what they want. I don't know why everyone is worshipping the very people who are hurting us all.

Now, yes, it is possible that a rigged jet or a rigged building was part of things. Jet fuel doesn't explode at that temperature, and the buildings came down much too cleanly.

I wasn't aware that anyone has been saying that 9/11 was a conspiracy designed by the U.S. government...

However, I do think that many of the government agencies and officials were aware of threats and security gaps, and did not do enough to prevent the 9/11 tragedy. I mean, there were so many "close calls" in the few years leading up to the 9/11 attacks... But these did not seem to change our behavior, security-wise.

And now it seems that there are still so many relatively easy-to-fix security gaps, that still have not been adequately addressed...

That said, I don't think anyone involved with our government conspired with the terrorist, or proactively contributed to the 9/11 attacks...

I just think we, the U.S., still seem to think that we are untouchable. 9/11 woke us up, but I don't think that many real changes have taken place. And the changes that have been instituted seem to be infringing upon our civil liberties which I find quite disturbing....

Yet you see reports on PBS about how tanker cars filled with dangerous chemicals sit unattended, just waiting to be used by someone with evil intentions.

I hope our next President is able to get us back-on-track, and in an even stronger position than we were before 9/11.

The people that believe this believe that the Bush administration wanted a reason to go to war with Iraq, so they staged a fake terrorist event that caused the deaths of over 3k people. Then, they turned public good will into an excuse to invade a sovereign nation, and we see how that turned out.

Of course, the same people that believe this are missing one important piece of the puzzle... which is, our government has never once shown itself to be competent enough to keep a major multinational conspiracy alive without anybody finding out about it.

To paraphrase Bill Maher, this is the same government that couldn't even combat high tide in New Orleans. The odds that a conspiracy on the scale of a 9/11 could still be kept under wraps is practically nil.

Which, ironically, is the same credence I give conspiracy theorists.

ADDENDUM: To Matt S... I'm confused. Are we supposed to believe you because you live in NYC? The fact of the matter is that the architectural engineers built the WTC towers to withstand the force of a plane... but they did not take into consideration the heat of several thousand gallons of jet fuel burning at thousands of degrees of heat. That heat actually melted the girders supporting the structure, and the buildings collapsed upon themselves. Unless your credentials include "I'm a New Yorker that also holds a degree in structural engineering" then you're simply grasping at straws.

Because the first building imploded in the way that buildings do when they are demolished.

Think about it. If a plane hit a building, how would it be possible for the building to just collapse on itself within a few hours afterward?

There are many websites that you can check out, but the basic premise is that the government sanctioned this because it wanted to ramp up several initiatives that it had already planned during the Clinton administration (increasing presidential authority, creating the Department of Homeland Security, the invasion and occupation of Iraq, etc.)

It's not a coincidence that we're in Iraq right now . . . and it was never about Saddam, WMDs or securing our freedom.
