I want to write my landlord explaining why my rent shouldn't be raised.

Have you been a loyal tenant? Do you pay your rent on time? Have you gotten very few complaints?

I'd write your landlord a letter and if you answered yes to the above questions than you have a good enough argument to at least start out with. If you're in school explain to them the burdens that come with that and how that conflicts with work; which is how you are able to pay rent. You could just BS the letter but I'm sure you'll have good enough reasons on your own that will sound legit.
