To create and open archive files by compressing them (making them smaller).

Winzip and Winrar are two of the most popular computer archive programs. They work to shrink a computer file or a series of files down to reduce the space required to store it.

Compression rates vary with the file size. For example text files are very easy to compress, but JPEGs use a compression data to store the image data so it is hard to compress them anymore. However, if you have a large collection of files then you can save space by using up the empty sector space at the end of each file.

For a long time it has been standard for companies to offer a zipped (compressed) version of their files on line to save in download time. Small programs like drivers never have to be archived like this, but larger programs like games do.

Winzip has been the industry accepted standard for over 10 years, although Microsoft still prefers its CABs files.

Winzip works by using algorithms to condense the information and by utilizing all the space in a sector.

Winzip files use the file extender code: .zip
Winrar files use the file extender code: .rar
If you see a file that ends with these three letters then you know which program created it and that you will need to unarchive it to use it or read anything in the file.

To get a copy of Winzip: http://www.winzip.com/downwz.htm
To get a copy of Winrar: http://www.download.com/3000-2250-10007677.html
Typically one program can unzip each format, but only creates one type of format. Exceptions do exist though.

Winzip has been around since Windows 3.1 so it will help you if you have an earlier version of windows. The program is made to be backward compatible because you never know how old an archived program is and if you need a version of Winzip that isn't made any more the archive, and the program would be useless.

I don't know about Winrar, but I assume the same logic holds; they have to be able to handle old archives.

its nt like tht..
winzip and winrar both can be used in both XP nd 98..

they are compression s/ws ..
thats it can compress a file upto 1/4th of its actual size..

they r mostly used for snd data thru internet so that v can compress the file and reduce the time ..

this process is called as zipping ..ie a compressed file is a zip file

Zipping is the process of compressing one or more files into an archive - so they take up less space on a computer or in an e-mail.

The 'archive', or 'zip' file, holds the compressed files until they are 'extracted' by a programme like WinZip.

Compression works by storing data in a more efficient way until the information is 'extracted' and returned to its original form.

One benefit of this is that you save storage space on your computer. Also, when you compress attachments on e-mails, they won't take so long to arrive or clog up your inbox so you can't receive any other e-mails.

forget those 2. get these 2 1 is called picozip that opens alot of different file extentions (zip & rar). 2.Another one i heard about opens alot of extensions 2 is called jzip.

What it's used for - its a handy tool used to open many different file extentions. The best way to use is to check all the extentions so you dont miss any.

It's like k-lite codec pack if you just want an mpeg and xvid file association for your media player, dont just choose those 2 extentions select all the formats so u dont miss anything and then your media player will play all the file formats.

interior the Winrar- once you click on "upload to archive". you get a field with each and every of the recommendations, in which you are going to discover "progressed" tab. In that tab you will locate an selection "set password" Use that and you will look after the archive.

The best explanation for these programs is that they compress data, making something smaller in size. If I compress some mp3s in a .zip, it'll make them smaller while they are in there.
