Honesty/integrity have longer term value and immediate term cost. It is in view of the immediate benefits that we lie or hide or pose falsely etc.... however, experience shows that a dishonest person ends up paying for his dishonesty one day or the other.... once a person's dishonesty or lack of integrity is exposed, people thereafter never trust the person and he gets into the 'no return' lane of scorn and mistrust for ever. That then is the opportunity cost of honesty and integrity.

I have lost friends and left social groups because some people cannot stand to hear the truth, anad I refuse to be associated with people that are representatives of a group I am in soiling my good name/reputation.

There are so many good and bad lies in this world...but in the end, we just have to be true to ourselves. Sometimes we just have to adjust the truth in order to be aware of others' feelings when we say it.
