Considering the mother is not "unfit" or anything like that...

By law the custodial parent decision should be in the best interest of the child and should be neutral to gender. That said, the odds are in the mothers favor provided there is not an obvious reason the father can provide a better life.

If you are considering divorce, don't let that be a factor to staying or going.

It depends. Why do you ask? Do you not want the father to be involved with the kids? The laws are changing, and I would encourage any father to pursue full custody of the children when needed. Some guys can be real good fathers, and should not have to be shafted by some prejudical law that says; The Mothers always get the kids. That's just BULL!. Any parents with any real sense would want both parents inviolved with the kids as much as possible. It's better for the kids. Unless, one parent; or both are jerks, then, it might be better that one parent is not around. But even then, the kids still pay the price.

It depends on the age of the children. Judges these days often give custody of children to the parent who is best suited for the children (sometimes it is the father now). If your child is under the age of 6, it's most likely the mother. After that, fathers get custody as much as mothers in some states.

Some states more pro-mother than other states. Depends on your divorce decree. It is in the best interest of the child to know both parents. Depends on a lot of other factors and how much each party fights for sole or joint custody.

I think it often works out that there is joint custody so both parents are involved in the decision making but the mother is the custodial parent meaning the children live with her as their residential home.
It is changing and more often the dads are custodial parents or they both are with the kids living 6 months at each home. It is what you can work out for the benefit of the children!
