I'm interested in clear communication, and I'm not a chatroom enthusiast, so I don't really find the "chatroom abbreviations" and text messaging style questions and responses too charming. In fact, trying to interpret them leaves me annoyed and I usually skip the question or response entirely.
Does anyone else find this as annoying as I do??

I can see I've hit a nerve! I was addressing the aptly referred to "drivel" that Wally terms it, when abbreviations are so prevalent that you have no way of interpreting what the writer is saying.
That kind of writing gets the attention it deserves............none in my book.
And thank you Isostope, your list is quite helpful. And I AGREE wholeheartedly about the emoticons.
Contrary to the inference, I AM NOT AT ALL STUCK IN THE 50's. To the contrary, I am quite skilled on the computer, with modern cells and other electronics, I do a lot of business on the internet, and all my banking as well, and I have an email club and post in other areas & websites, and in none of them is text message style abbreviations used to replace clear communication of the English language.
I'm really enjoying all your responses, thank you! Perhaps we should petition for introduction of emoticons here in Answers.

That is one of my pet peeves especially when they use it all the time like here at yahoo answers. I will not bother with a question if the asker was too lazy or too busy to use the spell check feature. I'm afraid we are raising a generation who will not be able to spell anything correctly before long. Can you imagine trying to write a term paper or something with those kinds of skills? Teachers must be the most annoyed by all of this.
.
What did people do before they were able to stay in contact with other people all the time like they do with all this text messaging? It's bad for relationships because it gives couples the ability to keep tabs on their significant others at all times and leads to suspicion and feelings of distrust.

Yeah, I feel exactly the same way...even took a high school senior to task over this very thing months ago. I told her that if God had meant the Internet to be used with text style messaging, all she would have in front of her would be a phone style keyboard.
We are NOT paying by the word. It often takes longer for people to figure out how to say something in "text language" than to say it flat out in English. And with even moderate typing skills anyone can type out a response in full sentences in a short amount of time.
And spell check really is a bonus.

Not so much annoyed as having the knowledge that most of the speak comes from the younger crowd and when the set off to find themselves a real job (not at McDonald's) they will be in a world of hurt (WOH).
Why?
To engage in the real working world you must be able to clearly communicate your thoughts and intents. If you are perceived as an individual that is unable to communicate you are instantly dismissed from consideration and advancement even if your ideas have substance and merit.
Disagree? Try using the speak in a Bank of America or Microsoft corporate stockholder meeting see how far you get.

Count me in...but in honesty, unless you are a very fast typer, it is hard to keep up with a continuous flow of words without some abbreviations. Unfortunatley, use of abbreviations is annoying as hell, you spend as much time figuring out what the other is saying, and often miss the mark completely. I hate it when questions are posed in text message form. Good luck and peace, Goldwing

drives me absolutely crazy ! the only thing i have ever been guilty of using is lol because i think most people know what that means. the thing i am really guilty of is not capitalizing - i do sometimes, but not often. it just really throws off my rhythm to have to hold that shift key.
if i see a question in "chat speak" i just go right on by it.
i have a hard enough time making sure i only hit the key once without worrying about what abbreviation i should use

I've never been in a chat room, but I find the abbreviations on text messages really annoying.

Yes, I once had the misfortune to charge a violation to some one because their question was unintelligible but they never rescinded the violation after I contested it. So, I guess it is okay to bastardize the English language on this site. Now, I don't even try to decipher the drivel, just go to another question.

More frustrating than annoying. My daughter had a very bad experience on chat rooms so now we avoid them. However I really love Y!A you do have some form of defence from creeps. You can block them or deny email access. Also stick to decent categories like seniors and you should have a more pleasant time.
Have a good day, cheers

I don't mind the odd abbreviation, as long as I can understand what the question is.
My biggest annoyance, is people who can't put a sentence together; use capital letters, commas and full stops. And paragraphs would help.
If it gets you stressed, then you should stick to Seniors and news.
Samazdata.net, if a very,very intellectual blog site.

It annoys me as well. And it's not just in chat rooms. All this texting going on everywhere - when did people quit using the phone for what it was meant for - communication!
