I see that you have a lot of feedback on this question already but there is no way it uses freon. It will be 134A refrigerant.
it needs:
Compressor
Receiver / drier
orifice / filter
R134A refrigerant and
compatible oil

You have a bunch of good answers already but I'll add my 2 cents. Your compressor has locked up and when you turn on the air or the defrosters the clutch engages and then the belt goes nuts.

Unplug the wiring connector to the clutch on the compressor until you can get it repaired. It will cost you over 1000 most likely if you take it in to an AC shop and get it fixed. You can take the old compressor off and then go to repair place that sells compressors, exchange it and also get a dryer. You will then need to go to an AC shop and have them evacuate the system and recharge it. That will save you a bunch of money.

good luck.

I HAVE BEEN IN THE AUTOMOTIVE REPAIR BUSINESS FOR OVER 37 YEARS AND SPECIALIZE IN A/C AND HEATING SO LET ME EXPLAIN A/C REPAIRS TO YOU SO THAT YOU FULLY UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING.

YOU SHOULD GET SEVERAL ESTIMATES BUT REMEMBER THAT A GOOD REPAIR SHOP SHOULD CHARGE YOU FOR CHECKING YOU’RE A/C SYSTEM COMPLETE AND IN MOST CASES IF YOU GET THE REPAIRS DONE BY THAT SHOP THEY WILL CREDIT THE CHECK OUT FEES TOWARD YOUR REPAIRS.

TYPICAL JOBS OF THE CALIBER CAN RANGE FROM $750.00 TO $1500.00 DEPENDING ON THE VEHICLE YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL BUT USE YOUR COMMON SINCE AND NEVER TAKE YOUR VEHICLE TO THE DEALER OR A CHAIN STORE BECAUSE THEY WILL IN EVERY CASE ALWAYS JUST PATCH IT AND YOU WILL BE BACK AND UPSET.

HAVE THE A/C SYSTEM CHECK IN THE STATE THAT IT IS IN FOR LEAKS FIRST, THE SYSTEM WILL NEED TO BE COMPLETELY FLUSHED OUT, AND MANY PEOPLE DISAGREE WITH THIS BUT IF NOT DONE RIGHT THE FIRST TIME THE SYSTEM WILL NEVER WORK CORRECTLY.

IF THE VEHICLE IS IN GREAT SHAPE AND YOU PLAN TO KEEP IT FOR MANY YEARS THEN ASK THE REPAIR SHOP THAT YOU PREFER NEW PARTS INSTEAD OF REBUILT PARTS IF AVAILABLE FOR THIS REPAIR.

DO NOT CUT CORNERS BY TRYING TO SAVE SOME MONEY BUYING YOUR OWN PARTS AND THE REPAIR SHOP SUPPLIES THE LABOR EVEN THOUGH THE PARTS MAY BE WARRANTED FROM YOUR SOURCE FOR WHAT IS KNOWN AS “LIFETIME” THIS MEANS NOTHING IF YOUR PART FAILS. THE REPAIR SHOP WILL NOT REDO THE COMPLETE SYSTEM FREE BECAUSE THEY DID NOT SUPPLY THE PARTS.

PARTS THAT YOU WILL NEED FOR THIS JOB...

1. NEW A/C COMPRESSOR ASSEMBLY WITH CLUTCH.

2. NEW ACCUMULATOR / DEHYDRATOR.

3. NEW EXPANSION TUBE / ORIFICE TUBE.

4. COMPLETE O-RING SET.

5. FLUSH SOLVENT.

6. FREON AND REFRIGERATE OIL.

7. NEW A/C PRESSURE SWITCH.

8. NEW SERPENTINE BELT.

The compressor can be bypassed on most models. However, Youll need a different belt. Until your compresser is replaced dont try to run a belt on it. Your defrost will still blow air only it will be hot or fan only. A lot of folks dont have ac but they defrost fine. Heater will work fine also

I just replace one on my sons truck. He ordered the compressor out of California. They was real professional and knew exactly what he needed. The right parts came in on the day they said it would be and it had every thing that he would need as in the seals and o-rings. They told him to also change the dryer. How to charge and oil up the system to spec. I changed out the compressor, dryer, and charged the system for a little over 300 bucks. The repair shop wanted 1400 bucks. So you need to do some research before giving your money to some shop. Everything was simple to change and we had no problems. And the warranty is for a year.

If you have no experience it needs the shop. I would go to an a/c shop not an auto repair. It sounds like a clutch problem but could be the compressor. You can run every thing except defrost, your a/c turns on during defrost.

You can run every thing except defrost, your a/c turns on during defrost. unless you unplug the wires going to the air conditioner compressor under your hood .. now to fix it so you can have air conditioning you will have to have the compressor changed and the ac recharged...

The compressor has failed! The system must be flushed, and a new compressor installed. Big bucks ($600+) at a shop. Until then unplug the wire to the compressor clutch.

It is most likely the high blower relay, but could be a wiring problem also. It's located above and to the left of the blower motor. There are 2 or 3 relays there together. I don't remember which one is the high blower relay, but switch them all, one at a time, with a known good one>
