RSVP means:
Respondez S'il Vous Plait

or in other words:
Reply if you please

or in simple terms:
Please send an answer to my invitation (and then it usually gives you a date the reply is required by - probably for catering purposes and finalising of numbers attending)

It is common courtesy that if the invitation states an RSVP - that you DO reply.

RSVP may refer to:

* "Répondez s'il-vous-plaît" or "Réservez s'il-vous-plaît", a French phrase that translates to "Please respond" or "Please book your place".
* "Response Shall Verify Presence", an English substitute for the meaning of "R.S.V.P."
* "Response Solicited for your Valuable Presence", another English substitute for the meaning of "R.S.V.P."

Translated into English it literally means, Respond If You Please! It is French: Répondez S'il Vous Plaît and simply means please reply.

"Respondez, s'il vous plait" -- or, please respond. They want to know if you're going to attend the event to which you've been invited.
