wont they both be using the same phone line. you cant fax if the phone line is in use correct?

The fax machine uses the voice connection, just like your phones. The DSL is using a digital overlay which is filtered out , which is why you have to put all your phone sets on filters or have a whole house filter at the intake and separate wiring. My wife and I share DSL (via a hub) and talk on the phone line all the time and I send faxes the same way.

If you have a single phone line in and have service from the phone company, there are filters that are installed to eliminate analog (phone and fax machines) from digital (modems, routers) from each other. You will be able to surf digitally but cannot receive phone analogous phone calls while using the fax.
