I installed a system some 15 years ago and found excellent books at the library.
Today I would also just do a general seach online to understand the fundamentals and options.

In general, soil testing needs to be done to test for percolation rates. This is how fast water is absorbed into the soil. Once this is determined, the septic is either buried in the ground completely or a mound system is used. This can be expensive. When I had soil tests in Florida, the tester said mound systems cost approx. $100 per inch.
