I'm not a liberal but I will take a go at it. Let's see........no not that, it falls under hand sanitation ....... Oh I've got one.......Gun control. Let us have all we want. That way the robbers don't know who has one and is taking a chance every time they rob someone. Like playing Russian roulette.

If it wasn't just another dig at these non-existant 'liberals', you might have a legit question. Too bad your purpose is to simple thrash the propaganda strawman. That's what your doing..isn't it? Ah. well.....Let's see...? In every civilization, 'government' has had to undertake almost all of the tasks that have to do with public infastructure, roads, aquaducts, public buildings and other facilities. Gvernment also had to administer law, both criminal and civil. Government also took upon itself regulation trade, health and safety and dealing with countries outside of its own. Govenment created a medium of exchange with a standard value. Often goverment provided for education..at least for the number needed to do the work of government. Later this concept became universal education. Government extended its authority over all public lands to prevent misuse or overuse. Government raised armies and navies for defense...which of course lead to the building of training facilities, arms depos, arms manufacturing facilities and hospitals for the wounded. Tax administration became its own entity to pay for all of the above as the maintenence of civilization could never be left to private enterprise. Private enterprise is a consumer of public facilities, not a generator of public facilities. Private enterprise can only exist where there's order, and law...a task not in the perview of private authority. As time went on things became more complicated. Toxic waste simply couldn't be left in the hands of those that created it.....dumping all manner of chemicals into the nearest river soon became a problem that only government regulation could deal with. And so on. The short answer to your question is....Gov't has to what the public demands of it as the people are the government. Government isn't the problem...bad government is the problem!

Left-wing Liberals EMBRACE the government to take control of every aspect of our lives. Judging from the responses read so far, many of these snot-nosed, droopy-eyed, limp-wristed misfits can only take shots at your "trailer park getting creamed in a tornado". So much for meaningful discourse from these Big Mommy Government types. Truth is, modern Liberalism has brainwashed many Americans into being whiny little crybabies who will not grow a full set of balls and brains and take charge of their own lives.

Tax cuts for the wealthist Americans, Cotton and Sugar farm subsidies, Corporate welfare, Nukes in Iran, ( let them have them ) , world terrorism. Aiding evangelical Christians getting funding and the ability to supplant the social safrety net. NCLB or no child left untested doctrines.
There are all kinds of things the governent can stay out of.

It is the government's job to protect me from others. (ie, police, military, etc) It is NOT the government's job to protect me from myself.

Thus, anything I wish to do that doesn't hurt anyone besides myself is none of the government's business. So for example, the use of recreational drugs is not something that the government needs to fix. (I do think using them is moronic, but that doesn't mean it should be illegal)

Racial exclusivity in private organisations. Seriously, 2 years ago they went and took legal action against this one country club for not admitting a black man into membership.

It's a private organisation, it's not even a business, they should be able to admit whoeve they want.

It is not their job to issue signing statements in an effort to avoid constitutional lawmaking processes.

Well all problems are a unique opportunity for politicians to get themelves re-elected and they damn well know it too.

Only a fool would try to win a election with some half assed twisted morality tale bullshit platform...along the line of "you sort it out..while I do nothing and go cash my paycheck"..

(is all this about conservatives tryiing to lower the publics expectations btw)
