A depression of sorts (not sure if it would be categorized as resembling a sinkhole) is beginning to form next to the location of our private well near the house. The well is located near the top of a slope, and the depression -- now maybe 4"-6" deep at its worst -- is on the uphill side of the well, about two feet away from it. The total depression is maybe around a foot, 16 inches in diameter.

First noticed it earlier this summer when it was a few inches deep. I put soil there and grass seed, not thinking the problem through entirely. Now it formed again, a bit deeper this time.

The subdivision is built on top of a rather high glacial hill. Location is in the upper Midwest.

What's causing this, what do I need to know about it, and what should I do about it?

Thank you.

You may have to have your well checked to see if it has a leak that's causing it. A well in Minnesota has to have an 18 inch thick by three square foot cement barrier to ward off just such a thing.
I would have the well checked first to make sure there's no leak, then go from there. Something is washing the ground away, it may be worse down below several feet, maybe your just standing on the tip of the iceberg.

how deep is the well, if it is rather shallow, then you may need to worry about your water. if it is more than 100 feet then you don't have to worry about the water. it is simply too deep to be affected by such a small hole it sounds like a small area of under ground water(a few feet below the ground) that is slowly washing away the dirt. I would fill it with cement from any local hardware store. if you want to, you could dig down a few feet and around on the surface to make sure that the cement will not shift after you pour. on the other hand, you could dig down and fill the hole with round stone. round stone is cheap and will allow the water to flow through rather than wash it away. surrounding dirt may wash away so gravel should sink and fill in the surrounding area. you may need to fill more than once to take care of the whole problem.

well that is the water pocket is letting in dirt it could fill in your well and you will have to drill another or it could be a water pocket over your well and it is felling in and not your well eather way the person that put the well down should know by looking at it if not he should have a test to see if dirt is in the water (well)
