Yes, indeed - the misconception that the Civil War was not about slavery still persists even today!
How's this for another misconception, right out of the mouth of South Carolina's Governor, Francis W. Pickens:
"In the Southern States there are two entirely distinct and separate races, and one has been held in subjection to the other by peaceful inheritance from worthy and patriotic ancestors, and all who know the races well know that it is the only form of government that can preserve both, and administer the blessings of civilization with order and in harmony."
Francis W. Pickens, Legislature of South Carolina, Dec. 10th, 1860

The big misconception is that it was fought for slavery. That's not really true - the ending of slavery was happy result, but not the cause. A large percentage of people in the north didn't really care or feel like being involved.
The truth is, it was fought over land and over state rights - - the south preferred a system where states held the majority of power, where as the north favored federal power. The sucession of the south meant a loss of land, and a less stable US, and the north didn't like that - hence the civil war. The slavery issue was more of a way to justify the war (think " WMDs") at first. Emanicpation didn't come into it until 1862.
The states rights they were concerned with, to answer a poster above, was mostly to do with taxation, representation, and creation of laws.

Sure there are misconceptions about the American Civil War. The history books can only hold so much. A lot of details always get left out. The same holds true for any other major historical event. That's why we have to study past the basics that they teach us in school. So we can get a fuller picture of the event.

The single biggest misconception is the delusion that it wasn't about slavery. Sure surprised me when I moved from Chicago to Texas!

The people from the south say that it was no about slavery. They say it was about State's Rights. But which Rights did the southern states fight the war over??? THE RIGHT TO OWN SLAVES!
Although, keeping an open mind, one can see why they would have been so bent on keeping slavery. It's not that they were bad people. The fact is, their whole economy was based on the use of slave labor. So for the Federal Government to suddenly tell them they can't have slaves was a major blow to their whole way of life.
