The colony of Connecticut was settled by liberal and tolerant leaders from Puritan Massachusetts. The Massachusetts Bay Colony was founded by the Puritans from England who rejected the Anglican or Church of England. They were Congregationists who believed in a fundamentalist view of life and left little or no room for dissention. Although they stressed hard work, self-sufficiency and thrift they were intolerant. A tolerant minister, named Thomas Hooker, brought his congregation to the banks of the Connecticut River where he began a new colony. Although people were required to be a member of the Congregationist Church there was more toleration than in Massachusets. After 1705 the Quakers were allowed, and eventually Baptists, Episcopalians, Methodists, and Presbyterians. Many people wanted to settle Connecticut in the 1700s because it was a prosperous colony with its thriving shipbuilding, trading, farming and whaling industries. I hope that this has been a help to you.

People wanted to settle colonial Connecticut because of the fertile land and the freedom of religion, the "government" wasn t as harsh as Massachusets. Connecticut also had a variety of ports where one could dock their ships, this made it very easy for trade.
