Both the 2 L and 10 L are only given to the nearest whole numbers. If you just add the numbers, you get 12.3933, but to the nearest whole number, this is 12.

There are some who would say that the answer is 10 L because only a single significant figure should be used. This is usually not the convention used in chemistry. To record 10 liters is meaning between 9.5 and 10.49 rounded to the nearest units.

To say that 10 L means between 5.1 liters and 14.99 liters (a single significant figure) is to really bend reality. No chemist would ever be this sloppy.

First add them up.

The weakest link is the 2L. So base your sig figs on that
