I had an old 79 Mazda 626 that had a 7 year old Panasonic battery in it that finally gave out.

Much depends on how you drive your car. If all your driving is stop and go, less than 2 miles, you put a lot of load on your battery with little chance to recharge. Starting is the biggest drain on a battery.

If most of your driving is highway, you could go many miles and years with little battery problems.

When I worked at the dealer, I once had a Miata that needed a battery replacement off the new car lot, less than 20 miles on it. The customer had the car towed in with new battery the same day. It was bad also. Pretty rare, but it does happen.

It depends. The old Miatas have batteries that will last you over 15 years. Not sure about the Mazda 3 though. If it's loaded with power accessories, the life is shortened.

No set time, batteries last 3-5 years in general, some may fail in a year or less. Battery's worst enemy is heat, cold will reduce its capacity temporarily but is not hard on it. Both overcharging a battery and discharging it fully will shorten the lifespan of a battery.
