My my, quite the ignorant bunch today! Apparently not many people are educated properly about Islam and have construed the wrong idea (not surprisingly with a severly anti-Islamic media that is successfully convincing people with lies and mistruths, especially about Islam and Muslims). Read the list Syed Aleemuddin Noor typed. Islam gave women those rights 1400 years ago, many of which were just given to women in the west a century ago! Women had absolutely no rights in the Middle Ages. None at all! And who ran everything then? The CHURCH! Coincidence? Yes, Saudi Arabia is a Muslim country. That doesn't mean everything they do is based on Islam, or that everything they do is permitted according to Islam! Where in the Qu'ran does it say that women cannot drive cars?? Where, idiot? Cars didn't even exist back then. Those laws were made by HUMANS, NOT by Islam, fool. If it was against Islam for women to drive cars, then all the Muslim women in the rest of the world wouldn't drive, and that is not the case! You are one ignorant buffoon. No, I feel sorry for YOU. Get a life. Get a grip. Get an education. Now I ask you this: Who are you kidding? Us or yourself?

nope. Gross generalization and fallacious argument.
But aside from that. I have no problem with Muslims, I don't care if they put up a Mosque down the street. I enjoy Middle Eastern food and music and culture. I oppose FGM and stoning because I consider myself reasonable and humane. I am not opposed to voluntary veiling. If a woman wants to veil it is her right to do so. If she doesn't want to there should be no punishment for that either. Women in the Middle East have been through a variety of things. At one time Iran was enormously cosmopolitan and women were doctors, professors and lawyers. Now that is less the case. In Egypt many women were western dress and go to college. In Saudi Arabia women cannot go out without supervision. So there are many different levels of rights for women.
Also within Islam a woman can ask for a divorce. Muhammed's first wife was much older than him and considered to have had a very strong personality. According to some Hadiths Muhammed even received some revelations while in bed with one of his wives. And he educated the women around him and encouraged them to ask questions. Islam has a long history. The Middle East is huge there are a variety of ways women have been treated and not all of it's bad. You might want to look into the issue further before making such generalizations.
I do not think that every single religion should be embraced no matter what. But there are plenty of Muslims who do not oppress women and I think that that should be encouraged and acknowledged.

One thing for sure, the women are put in their rightful places, any complaints and they are out on their butts. As for divorce its so fast that Reno could take some lessons. All a man needs to do is say, "I divorce you" three times and presto you are divorced. You never hear of any Islamic women complaining that they have been suppressed and if they so much as flirt with a male, its a public stoning. On second thought, I am beginning to like the Islamic religion - even Ali embraced the religion. If Bill Clinton and Bush were islamics there won't be any wars and I am definitely sure Bill will never regret it, Hilary would need more convincing though.

What an excellent question. I spent six months in the Middle East between Amman, Jordan and a very small village of about 450 people in Egypt. I found that the the Muslim religion makes a lot of sense. I found all the people to be so very kind and generous. I have to think I must have missed something somewhere or was not in the right place to see women suppressed. Maybe I just didn't see the suppression.
Anyway, I really liked the Arab people, the Egyptian people, and the country was beautiful. I know this doesn't answer your question, but I wanted you to know anyway.

Cultures which embrace Islamic ideals do suppress women - no one could ever convince me otherwise. Perhaps these liberals who embrace Islam and their views should read about the horrors of genital mutilation and abuse that is served upon the women in these cultures. You cannot decide to support only the portions which you like - it is a package deal, all or nothing.

I guess that the Islamic women of Indonesia and Pakistan, only the two most populous Islamic countries, didn't get the word straight when they became their country's leader.
Oddly, the men of those two nations elected them.
Maybe your characterization of Islam as anti-woman applies only to some versions of Islam [and the smaller ones at that].
:-)

If Muslims obey the ISLAMIC LAWS then compare and contrast between Muslim and non-Muslim women.

A very interesting question -- to which I have yet to hear a coherent answer. Should we celebrate all religions (in the name of multi-culturalism) even when they profess views that advocate the systematic suppression (or in some cases, killing) of broad classes of people that do not share their outlook?

multiculturalism allows for women to be oppressed, sure. it doesn't mean they do it themselves.
xenophobia doesn't allow for the personal freedoms of other people. it goes against the principle that people should live their lives as they see fit.
one's going to have to be sacrificed for the other.
