I googled it and found two models the 1890 and the 1906. I saw a picture of the 1906 and it looks about like you might expect. A very small rifle with a slide action. It was for sale for about $350.00. Who knows, maybe it used to belong to Tobias Wolfe.
I don't think you can buy a new one. They tend to use bolt action or single shot for target work and lever or semi-automatic for hunting.

That's a good question. I have an old (circa 1970) .22 Winchester lever action, and it still works like a charm. I'd imagine Winchester would put this same quality into their pump action rifles, but I don't know if any new ones are being made.

WInchester no longer produces the .22 caliber pump action rifle. They can still be found among collectors, at correspondingly high prices. Browsing, I could not find any pump action rimfires for sale, but there may still be some made somewhere.
If you were going to give a boy a rifle as a gift today, it would probably be bolt action.

Whether the book gives the rifle model # or not, you could get a photo & brief description at:
http:/www.gunbroker.com
& run a search for Winchester .22 rifle/pump-action.

I would put the word Winchester in a search engine such as Google, and as your search narrows to guns, add rifle, then .22, then pump action... like that. You'll find it, I'm sure. That was a good book, huh? Good luck at school--
