When ever I type my default gateway numbers into the adressbar and the window pops up. This window asks for the username and password. I've heard that you don't need to type a username but you do need a password. I typed "admin" (without the " ") and i click Ok. Then the same window keeps popping up. What am I doing wrong?

Leave username blank and enter admin in the password. If the logon box comes back someone has changed the default. There is a reset hole in the back of the router. Press this in with a ball point pen for 30 seconds.
Power off your router and power back up.
Username should be left blank and password will be admin.
You will need to re-enter any configuration changes that you have made before.

Hold in the reset button on the back of the router for 10-15 seconds and it should reset back to factory defaults. Then you'll be able to get in with the default password again. First thing you want to do is change the password to something secure. If it's a wireless router, change the SSID from the default and turn off SSID broadcasting. Enable WAP if it's not already enabled, and choose a secure passphrase.

Linksys basic user admin is admin and the password is Password. Until you change these to something unique anyone can access your lan setup. At my site below under Network Talk you can learn the settings you need to use.

hmm try resteting your router... there should be a reset button on the back or bottom of your router... then after that just follo what your linksys handbook tells you to.... your probably getting this problem because someone bought the router and used it and then returned it with their settings.
