I don't mind helping with homework. [ ' Hope it isn't illegal.]
Vast open grasslands allowed the Mongols to raise huge herds of horses. They were a mounted cavalry horde with excellent recurve bows and tremendous skill shooting arrows from horseback - not easy to do. On wide open flat battlefields slow marching infantry armies or heavy knights on war horses simply could not match them. The Mongols could ride circles around them and fire arrows while staying beyond the reach of sword or lance. {I think that's what saved much of Western Europe from invading horse archer armies like the Huns and the Mongols. They did not do as well in forests and mountains where mobility was limited.}
The key political change was the uniting of the tribes to provide a huge population of these related peoples. This gave them a manpower as well as a horsepower advantage.
A strong leader such as Genghis Khan was necessary to unite the tribes in the early 1200s.
The Mongols settled down and became more "civilized" after they conquered China. That usually affects a tough warrior people - makes them softer -though they still maintained a huge empire in Asia far beyond China's borders all the way to Baghdad.
I'm not sure what your teacher wants for the Japan invasion failure. That was largely due to weather - bad storms which thwarted the Mongol invasion fleet. It was called a "Kamikaze" wind which saved Japan. That's why they chose that name for their airborn suicide attackes in WWII. Mongols were not seafaring people anyway. I'm not sure why they even wanted Japan.
Sounds like a fun class.
