You have to be 16 to work with equipment with moving parts, or to walk into a walk-in cooler or freezer. You have to be 18 to work with equipment that has blades - like a meat slicer. But, there is nothing wrong with a child working a few hours especially on cash or as a bus boy. You do need to look up your state laws, because there is a maximum number of hours they can work on or preceeding school days, and they can work 8 hours on non-school days. You have to obey the curfew laws as well.
I worked as a manager for a large corporate chain, and I know that we had several 13 year old cashiers, but they could only work 3 hour shifts, and 8 on non-school days. They had to leave by 6 p.m. on school days.

where i'm from Boston you can legally hire on a teen at 14. however the parent has to sign an official (name of restaurant) form giving the teen permission to work.
when that is done. the teen can only work a maximum of 3 hour's a day, that is the law. however, the teen can work a few hour's longer on the weekend. if you fall under the massachuesetts law then you will have to find out exactly how many hour's hor the weekend's. though i'm possitive about the 3 hour a say week day law, i'm not sure about the weekend.
in all states in america the law differ's. so you'll need to find this out. but please find out before hiring her on. because some states dont allow children to work till 15 year's of age. other's 16.
so call around.
hope this was helpful.
oh maybe you can post the question under the parent's catagory on yahoo state what state you live in and ask what is the lawful age that a teen can work in this state.
i'm sure there will be parent's out there who will knowl
good luck

well in Nashville Tennessee we hire people at the age of 16 its best to wait until their 16 instead of 15.Because she is just like getting out of middle school and going to high school.plus she wouldn't get pay that much because she goes to school.but she can work if you problemly make her work 3 to 4hours on school nights and weekends make her work full hours.

I think child labor laws prevent you from hiring anyone under 16, but check the law. I'm not sure anymore.
