It means to strive to be a person of substance or have it as a goal in life.

It's vastly subjective..a laid back Islander could think that
passing the day on a beach in nature is the ultimate in
connecting to the universe, while somebody in a cubicle
on a computer can be working the stock market so he
can attain his dream. A meditator seeks nirvana while
an athlete reaches endorphin fueled euphoria by hitting
a perfect serve 900 times in a row. There are those
who think that life's only significant if you can help
others 24-7 and those who's only goal is to become
rich and famous. In the long run, it's how you feel
about yourself. There is really nobody to judge you
but you and no real criteria for "significance".

Well,
Living a significant life is something different for everyone... Who do you want to be? What do you want to do? Once you have fulfilled that, that's when you know you've lived a significant life.
I was talking to one of my friends and he said to me one day, "You know, I finally discovered the meaning of my life. It simply is to make people feel good." At first it was kind of like what? He's a highschooler and it just seemed kind of wierd... but really... what if that is your meaning? That is your mere significance? To make a hand full of people feel good about themselves? From all we know that could be the answer to who we are. Making a difference in someone's life might not change the world, but it could change that one person. And for all you know, THAT person could change the world. All because of you.
But then again, that's just my theory :]

When they say "it is different for everyone" or "it is very subjective" what they are telling you is that it is imaginary. See yourself through the eyes of others and then imagine them praising some good deed that you do. That imaginary praise is then the basis of your worth/significance.
We long for our worth to be based on who we are and not what we do for others. That can only happen if there is a God who created us and loves us.
