I think that people in general are starting to become disconnected from their communities, and because of that the idea of etiquette has become secondary. We have manners so that the people around us can feel comfortable and respected. As we close ourselves off in our cubicles and homes behind computer screens we are losing the basic desire to interact with other human beings on that level.
Don't get me wrong computers are wonderful things, I'm sitting in front of one right now obviously, however it doesn't take the place of actual communities and human interaction. If the focus stopped being so individual and self oriented and more outward and community minded then there would be a resurgence of manners due to their necessity in order to make an active social community work.

I think we've gotten so cought up in the whole Darwinism theory (only the strong survive) that we forget about those manners, etc. Everyone is in such a hurry they don't feel they have time to say thank you (and actually mean it) or say "Hi, how are you?" It's always "the early bird gets the worm" so I think Americans (yes, I am American) feel they are in competition with everyone and honestly, probably don't have much regard for anyone else. (This is not a generalization about everyone, just some people).

Obviously you aren't an american. Not all americans have lost there class and or manners, as you stated. Look at any group of people and you could address the same question to them....P.S. you wouldn't know the TRUTH even if it bit you in the butt.

Its not just Americans.
Arrogance is everywhere. I see people everyday that have no respect for anyone else. and i don't mean to stereotype but it seems to be the younger generation that are the worst offenders. Not all younge people are like that but there are alot that are.

I'm 60. I think it has to do with which generation you're talking about, where geographically they were raised and whether they were taught manners and had class to begin with. Class teaches manners. I'm from the South, and graciousness was taught.

Popular American society finds rudeness funny sometimes. People lack compassion and courage that it takes to treat others neighborly. I try to remain courteous and kind to everyone I meet. Peace.

I think its because they have lost their jobs. They have been used to making allot more money than they do now. Have lost allot or their disposable income, so they take it out on others. Just what I think. Goon question!
