First, let me apologize for the rude ignorant answers above me. If your boyfriend is still sucking his thumb, it is a habit he knows he needs to break and has either not been forced to break it, or just hasn't been able to on his own.

Hopefully you two are close enough that you can discuss it. Be nice...he's probably embarrassed and may be defensive about it.

Make sure he wants to stop and ask if you can help him. You can buy the "nail biters polish" that tastes terrible (many drugstores carry it). It may not stop him, but will help remind him when he is sucking his thumb and help him try to break the habit. That's a start.

I used to be a nailbiter. It took conscious effort and several years of trying to finally stop. These are nervous habits and are hard to break. Be patient together and help him.

If this doesn't work... he made need to seek a doctor's assistance (they have mouth-guards and other devices to help too).

If a 26 year old is sucking his thumb, he has seriously more problems than you probably want to deal with. There are so many mentally stable men out there, why in the world would you want to waste your time with someone like this?

In answer to your question though .... it's a bad habit that only he can break on his own. There is nothing you can do to make him change his ways or his bad habits. It's like cursing or excessive drinking ... you may want to try and help him break these behaviors but in the end, only he can make these changes in his life.

At this age it maybe to late to do anything. How about hypnotizing him ? Only thing I can think of. Best of luck.
