are there any anime out there that are at least a little deep (meaning they ask some thought provoking questions)
A good example would be Neon Genesis Evangelion
but nothing like Paranoia Agent (thats just too weird)

I may be able to come up with a few.
If you watch Code Geass (http://myanimelist.net/anime.php?id=1575 ) or Death Note (http://myanimelist.net/anime.php?id=1535 ) you get to see the juxtaposition of two opposing sides fighting against each other, but both believing that they are fighting for what is best for everyone.

Watch Kino's travels/journeys its a pretty good anime with alot of meaning behind every episode. it basically explores different aspects of the human heart ie emotions. its a really good series. not much action though. watch it its a must see.
anime that is more evangelion like? um try RahXephon
i dunno much similar to evangelion sorry
but some brilliant psychological anime i've seen are boogiepop phantom, Serial Experiments Lain, monster and Chobits.
sorry but these are not similar to evangelion as in sci fi an robots n stuff. but very thought provoking
and btw lol paranoia agent is one of the extreme ones, the ones i mentioned are not as extreme but still pretty good
