No matter what you do, you are always going to be something to someone.
If you want to be a musician, you'll be a nerd. If you want to be an athlete, you'll be a jock. If you want to be a doctor, you'll be a peon for the FDA.
By approaching life with the need to evade criticism, you will end up doing nothing with it. Do what you want to do.

Insightful resource for the pianist.
There's a great book that may help some people with technical areas as well as interpretive that I thought I might also let you know about.
It is a free online book and it contains many interviews with historical concert pianists who share their advice and training methods.
You can find it here:

Why do you care what anybody thinks about such a thing? You should pay no mind to anyone who thinks you're a nerd. Anyone who holds such an opinion, is not worthy of your consideration. If playing piano for the church choir is what you want to do then, you should go right ahead.

One of my best friends is in a church choir. I would never consider her to be a nerd. Anyone who does has no idea what they are talking about. If it is something you would really enjoy, then I would say go for it!

Who cares whether people would think you were a nerd or not?! It sounds like a kind and good thing to do, and if you love playing piano, then why not?

It would be a shame if you passed up this opportunity to make music to the glory of God, simply because you are afraid of being considered a nerd by some narrow-minded folks with nothing better to do than judge. Follow you heart!

Let's see - you have musical ability, you have a desire to help people AND offer your talent to your church; your playing piano will assist and inspire OTHER people to sing and perhaps also play THEIR instruments. Your own skills will improve, and your confidence will also grow. I would not call you a nerd - I would call you and ANGEL.

Don't worry about what other people think. What matters is if you want to play the piano. Just like my name, always be natural. Be true to yourself and be happy. Happy notes!
