We've done Italy in October and it was wonderful with not as many tourists. We are doing a driving tour of the Pacific northwest this October, it's wonderful up there and full of great finds. Ashland, Oregon has the Shakespeare festival still on and there is always wine tasting in the region. I've also headed to Puerto Vallarta area in late October (which is the finish of hurricane season). Temperatures in October are warm, but not too hot. Perfect. If you catch Mexico in late October, fares are less expensive and hotels go up in price in November.

Cape Breton, in Nova Scotia, Canada. There is a Celtic music festival called "Celtic Colours." A different concert every night for a week, in a different little town. In old churches, schools etc. Performers and concert goers come from all over the world. You must book early to get the best bed and breakfasts. The leaves are at their peak colours. Its beautiful The drive alone is magnificent, through the Cabot Trail, a national park. You will see moose and some of the most beautiful scenery in the world.

I believe it is a great time to have a long car trip through an unpopulated are. Every year in early October I drive throughout New York and look at the trees.

I always take a trip to the Texas coast in October. The weather is still warm enough to enjoy the beach, but there are no crowds.

I live in southern West Virginia. In October, we have the leaves changing colors as well as bridge day in Fayetteville. People come from all over the world to parachute from the worlds largest single arch spanned bridge, as well as Gauley Rafting Season that thrill even the most seasoned rafters.
