I can't imagine that slavery was much fun. But ironically blacks and whites probably got along better than now. When you go down south today you see slaves' quarters often near the white owned plantation. An example of this is "Mulberry Row" where slaves lived near Jefferson's Montecello. Compare that with blacks trying to move into an all white neighborhood in more recent times. Also black and white people didn't compete for the same jobs. It was to the advantage of the Union armies to cause trouble between the whites and the blacks in the South during the Civil War. Black men were encouraged to join the Union army and fight against the South for their freedom. Then there were the horrors of Reconstruction after the Civil War which led to more hatred between the whites and the blacks. This led to the birth of the KKK.
