Every Chevelle SS that I have seen, has had a 396 in it. Look on the driver's door or for a tag under the hood.

For Chevelle enthusiasts who wanted a high-performance mid-sized car but with a hot small-block V8, rather than the big-block found in the SS 396, the regular Chevelle and Malibu models were available with a 350-horsepower 327 cubic-inch V8 (option code L-79) in 1965 and 1966. That same engine was also offered for 1967-68, but downrated "on paper" to 325 horsepower, the same as the standard 396 found in the SS 396.

The 65 Chevelle had only five V8 engines. a 283, 250 hp. 327, 300 hp, 327 and a 350 hp 327. The 375 hp. 396 came out late in the year and there were only 200 of these beasts ever produced.

your right about the engine sizes as standard engines but they also had optional engines of 396 big block and 454 big block depending on the particular year chevelle your talking about, the big blocks had a lot of horsepower but the 350's and 307's and 327's were your basic engines and varied in horsepower with the 327 L79 engine having 350HP. as an option was probably the best small block engine.

Chevelle had engines from a in-line 6 to a 454. You'll have to do a little (very little) research to find what you are looking for.
