Unquestionably the great single talent to ever play the game. Unfortunately his star crossed career kept him for breaking every record in the books. Still he did things that were almost inhuman. His home runs were titanic and his speed was unbelievable. He may have been the most beloved of all Yankees.

He often said that if he knew he was going to live so long, he would have taken better care of himself. His imperfections I believe is what endeared him to the fans. He was as vulnerable as anyone and yet was able to rise to the occasion when it counted on the field.

I had the great fortune of meeting Mickey Mantle on three occasions in my life. He was kind and showed great respect. As a youngster it meant the world to me.

I know his life off the field and certainly after his playing days did not measure up to other peoples expectations but he will always be remembered as one of the greatest Yankees of all time and maybe one of the 10 greatest players....period!

My favorite player to be sure!

Mickey had a bad alcohol problem and it's what killed him.........Mickey also had other problems and that's the reason he and his wife weren't together.........That was Mickey the man...............Mickey the ballplayer was fantastic and a joy to watch............He had a great sense of humor and said things about himself like "Can you imagine what a great player I would have been if I didn't drink???".......That's not word for word but that is the crux of that statement...........His strength lied in his forearms..........They were massive and power laden........When he first came up to the majors he didn't do that well and was sent down to the minors where he wanted to quit..........His Dad talked him into staying..........There are several books out by him and about him that are really well worth the read..........If you want I'll get you some of the titles and perhaps you'll be able to find them..........They tell the stories of Mantle very well..........CAT

Although I was never born in his generation, I still look at him as a great Yankee legend a true hero and a fan favorite.

The Mick is the most beloved Yankee of all time right next to Derek Jeter and Phil Rizzuto. You dont know why you love him, you just have that feeling.

Although Mickey Mantle was much admired, he married his wife Merlyn Johnson not because he loved her, but because his domineering father told him to. While his drinking became public knowledge during his lifetime, the press kept his many marital infidelities quiet. The couple had four children, all sons. Like Mickey, Merlyn and the sons all became alcoholics. Mickey stopped drinking only a year before his death in 1995. "This is a role model: Don't be like me," he said. He obviously understood that he had not lived the life he should have, in spite of his fabulous career.

He was one of the greatest players of all time. He could hit for average, power, and can make great plays as the Yankees center fielder. If it wasn't for his knee injuries, and alcoholism, he would have a .300 or better average, and 600 home runs. He was a great player that the Yankees and the fans are lucky to have.

This man was an Icon... in his day he was the most looked up to player of his era... Yes he Had an alcohol problem and his admitting that in his final days openly, and telling the youth of today to Not Be Like Him.. His story was a tragic succes story as he was never really comfortable being a celeberty, but was thrust into fame at a young age, not to mention the culture shock of being a Hayseed and then Being sent to play in the Biggest Media market in the world.....

The recent Peter Golenbock novel on Mantle's life tells it all. Actually a pretty tragic figure, but by his own actions. But in the music industry, such destructive behavior on the self & family are seemingly applauded to some degree. One can only wonder what records he would have set if he only kept himself in marginally better health.

On this date in 1956 he hit his 50th hr in the 11th to clinch the pennant.

He goes on to win the tripple crown that year with:
.353 BA
52 HR
130 RBI

Alcohol problem or not he is still one of the greats.

All of the Great Micks hits, HR,s came from his brute strength and nothing more. He didn't need drugs, to give him power, he worked for it,when young and before baseball.

Mickey drank himself to death. A tragic figure and proof that fame, adoration, and money can't buy happiness.
