Hi, my laptop have just crashed and I wish to repair it at a minimum cost or at least recover the data inside. Any reliable and affordable place to recommend?

Anyone have any recommendations on where to buy a new laptop?

First, what caused your computer to crash? Can you boot up to at least display the BIOS? If it is a problem with the hard drive, just replace it. It is very easy to do, and hopefully you still have the installation disks that came with your laptop. (If not, see if you can borrow a friends disk. As long as it is the same OS, the code on the "original windows" sticker will work with your motherboard.) Pick up a laptop hard drive of at least 7200 RPM and the largest cache (8mb or 16mb) that you can afford.

To remove the hard drive, unplug the laptop, remove the battery. Flip the laptop over and look for the hard drive symbol. (Looks like three/four circles on top of each other.) Unscrew the cover. (You may wish to pick up a computer tool kit from Radio Shack or CompUSA.) Pull out the retainer containing the hard drive, remove the hard drive from the retainer, put in the new hard drive in the retainer, put the connector back on (if your laptop has one), and return the new hard drive into the laptop. Install the OS and you are ready to go.

If it is a problem with the memory, then your data on the hard drive should be safe. Unplug, remove battery. Open the lid where the RAM is at. Remove all RAM except for one. Try to start the computer. If it doesn't work, remove that RAM and insert another RAM. Continue. Bad RAM won't allow the computer to start.

If all else fails, contact ITI Computer Solutions, 7124 Forest Hill Avenue, Richmond, VA 23225. 804-421-0573

Good luck with your laptop!
