I'm getting a juvenile corn snake soon and I found a classified for a 40 gal tank with supplies for 40 bucks(niiice price).
Would that even be appropriate for a small corn snake?Thats a big tank!Would there be any bad effects because of that?

That is a good deal and hard to pass up! I would get it but as others said, it is alot of space for one babie. What you can do until he/she is large enough for the whole cage is to have a piece of plexiglass or wood cut(cheap at home depot/lowes) that will slide in the cage as a divider. This way you make the cage smaller. Just be sure to measure properly so you get the right size. I did the same thing for a 55g and two juvenile brazilian boas. Worked like a charm!!

That is quite large for a young corn. Make sure you have a large enough under tank heater at one side, and have a lot of hiding places throughout the tank. If your corn is a hatchling, you might want to pick up a 10 gallon for about $10.00 until the snake is about 2 feet long, then switch.

Although you'd think it would be much happier in a larger cage, it just isn't so. They will sometimes get stressed out in such a large space, and not eat. I had one in a 55 and it would never come out of hiding or eat. Once it was in a 10, it warmed up and was fine.

Get the 40 breeder now, its a great price and hard to pass up. But start with a 10, and once it is a foot or so long, move it into the 40.

I do not know a lot about snakes, but wouldn't it be harder to keep the temperature steady for him in a larger tank?
You could buy that one, since it is at a great price and save it for when it's an adult and get a smaller tank for his starter home.

It's okay for most of the time, but you need to give him a smaller space to get warm. Of course you should feed him outside of the cage in a paper bag, that will take care of any issues about him not being able to catch his food in such a big cage. You might want to get him a box or something that he can curl up and be tight in. My corny girl is 3 years old, a few feet long, and is happy as a clam in a 20 gallon. I make sure to take her out when I can, though!

He'll be more than happy in that huge tank, in fact i think that that huge tank is a lot better than the required tank.

It's excellent size, it's bigger than your corn will need. He'll be fine, in fact, he'll probably be happier than in a recommended size tank.

Good luck with your new snake.
