Im doing a McAfee virus scan and it's up to 600,000 files. Where/what are these files? I do have a lot of pictures and music on my comp but ..... geesh!
I'm doing the scan because my computer is running out of memory! It holds 80 GB in my hard drive. and there's not even 1 GB of free space left!
I dont even know what my main question here is. I just want some more space on my comp to hold more pictures and stuff.
ohhh, heres a question. what is a defragment? should i do that?

You should get an external hard drive if you're not willing to buy a new computer. They have ones that hold terabytes now. A terabyte is {I think} 1000 gigabytes. We got one that holds 500 gigs. It wasn't expensive. Since I have a son who is just under a year and have taken more than 4000 pictures of him so far, it was a pretty good investment ;)

Windows defragmenter will not work unless you have at least 15% free space (12 gigabytes on an 80 gig drive).
Download Cleanup! version 4.0 from Steven Gould at: http://www.stevengould.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=30&Itemid=73 That will remove temp files, cookies, and other assorted garbage.
A new 160 gig internal drive for your desktop to add in as secondary storage will cost about sixty bucks at newegg.com . You'll need another drive if you save a lot of music and pictures.
Burn some of the pictures on the drive you have to cd, then delete from the hard drive to create space. When you have 12 to 15 gigs free, then run the disk defragmenter.

I had close to a million on an older computer. I think when you download system updates there are hundreds of files within a compressed file that updates hundreds of modules. They are all counted.
Defragmentation is putting together all of the files that are stored split into pieces. It will save a little space and make files easier to access. It should be done when the defragmentation program recommends it.

You have 600k infected files? Thats not good, that would mean youve probably had a virus sitting around there way too long. If you cant clean these files, they will need quarantined or deleted.
Defragmenting basically means unlcuttering your hard drive, so yes, it should free up some space. You can also delete temporary files, like old downloads, installation programs, internet temp., etc.

You might just have a bad virus taking up space, which mcafee should remove. yes you should defragment. Derfragmenting takes files that are split up on your hard drive and puts them in the same place so it doesn't take as long to access them.

Hi
This is what I told someone who needed to clean their computer. I copied and pasted this:
You can start off by shutting down some startup programs by doing this:
1. Press the Start button on your desktop.
2. Press Run
3. Type in msconfig
4. Go to the Startup tab and uncheck the startup items you do not want to start.
If you are unsure about what to shut down, research the name of the startup item before you shut it down. If you shut down programs using msconfig, you will need to restart your computer so the changes will take effect.
You can also defrag your hard drive by going to the Start menu, go to the Accessories folder, then System Tools, and then open Disk Defragmenter program. Many files are scattered across your hard drive, and performing a defrag will basically rearrange these files so they are closer, which will increase your computer's performance. Maybe this can explain it better than me:
http://www.auslogics.com/disk-defrag/index.php
You also clean your hard drive by going to the same location where Disk Defragmenter is located and open the Disk Cleanup program, which will clean your hard drive.
You can download registry cleaners and a registry defrag by going here:
CCleaner (Also cleans your hard drive):
http://www.ccleaner.com/
Eusing:
http://www.eusing.com/free_registry_clea...
Auslogics Registry Defrag:
http://www.auslogics.com/registry-defrag...
Before you make any changes to your registry, back it up first. CCleaner and Eusing allow you to do this. You can back it up to a USB flash drive or CD because registries tend to be large.
You can also purchase more memory for your computer by going here: www.crucial.com
It has tools that will ensure that you purchase the correct memory for your computer, and it will tell you the current amount of memory your computer has. Crucial's memory is not expensive and it is safe to order online from this website.
If you have a Windows operating system, I suggest that you to to Microsoft's website and download the latest security updates as well.
You can also uninstall programs that you no longer use, and you could get rid of files that you no longer use, such as music, videos, documents, pictures, etc.
If you are interested in any security or system optimization programs for your computer, you can go to www.download.com. It has a lot of good, free programs to download. I hope this helps you.

No you need to burn all that you have to CD's or DVD's and then delete all of it.
The best thing is to Buy an External Drive and Get all that off your computer. It suprises me your computer even works.
Yo have to get rid of that stuff, or your computer will lock up.

You definitely need to fit a bigger hard drive. 80 GB is nothing nowadays.
