v = u + at is the formula to be used for both up-speed and downspeed, with the difference being the sign for a, acceleration.

For upward, a will be -g where g is the acceleration due to gravity.

v = u - gt

For downward, a will be +g

So, v = u + gt

u is the initial velocity, v the final velocity and t the time.
