I am glad you asked! It makes me feel less alone. For as long as I can remember, I have had the same problem. Here's how I deal with it:
1) Don't try to "not think" because that just gets you thinking about not thinking. Since you already think too much, you know what this is like!
2) Focus on an image of something simple or smooth like the ocean or a blank wall. While you do this, take deep breaths and everytime you exhale, try to feel the image becoming stronger.
3) Shift your attention completely to things that you are physically feeling. Don't put any words to the feelings, just feel how they affect you and how they change. For this, again, I mostly try to focus on what I'm looking at or on my breathing.
4) If you are thinking too much while you should be doing something or making a decision (like when driving or playing a sport), practice the activity without judging yourself until things become automatic. (This last part is the biggest thing for me! I judge myself VERY harshly when I make incorrect decisions so I tend to over-think the decision until it's too late. If I let go of the consequences and just let my brain work naturally, it usually turns out OK!!) If other people are judging you too much, don't include them in your activity or in your practice. (I had to stop telling my parents about my schoolwork because they were so obsessed with me being perfect.)
5) Find ways to relax that involve passive absorption and no activity. I like to go to movies by myself, to take walks where I just wander around, or I just sit and watch the rain fall. It's a good way of giving my brain a break when I get tired of thinking about everything all the time. I used to play video games, but that gets me thinking too much about the game and when I'm done, I find myself continuing to think about the game for a while afterwards. Anything that doesn't require effort or anything that doesn't have an objective (like winning, or finishing something, etc) is good for relaxing the old brain.
There's so much more I could tell you because I've thought about this problem way too much! I hope this helps!
P.S. It also helps if you can find a job where thinking too much is good. I work in research where it's normal to obsess about things and think about them 24 hours a day.

too bad you can't find a quiet place to just set and listen to the little noises that go on for the most part un-noticed silence is relaxing , most people ( myself included ) are afraid to spend 4 seconds in silence , but give it a try , and free your mind from all the worry that has you traped in turmoil...

Physical activity, exertion, exhaustion. This releases a chemical in the brain that puts it in neutral.
Really, try it.
Good Luck

No problem!
Find a religion that suits you and become a true believer.
You pick the right one and they will severely punish you if they catch you trying to think.
